Beach Volleyball Digest: The Hermosa DOUBLE FINAL; Alison's perfect send-off; John Hyden on the pod; World Champs update

September 7

Double. Final.

Good morning, beach volleyball fans,

Everyone who reads this newsletter or listens to the podcast or reads other bits of my writing might not know everything there is to know about me, but they do know this: I am a proponent of double-elimination formats in beach volleyball. We even made a shirt that says "Give me double elim or give me death."

It is a hill I've chosen to die on in this life.

After Hermosa, I hope there are others on that hill with me.

The ending could not have been more perfect: A double-final on the men's side, featuring second-seeded Chaim Schalk and James Shaw against the magical Brazilians, Alison and Alvaro, who were playing their last tournament together, and Alison his last tournament on American soil.

To a double-final it went, where Alison sort of decided enough was enough, and he'd have all of the blocks, thank you very much, in a 21-14 double-final win that had Geeter on the mic asking for just one more set, pretty please.

The women's side featured no such theatrics: Kelly Cheng and Molly Shaw were ruthless in their dismantling of the field, winning a 32-team event in straight sets the whole way through. It's their first win as a team, and the $25,000 check more than doubles their most prize money in a tournament this year.

Not bad for a one-off event that saw prize money soar by $30,000 on the eve of the tournament.

An added bonus: Our guy Tri Bourne was back on the mic for the tournament, living his best retired life, and he chatted about as much with his old partner and coach, John Hyden.

The week in SANDCAST Studios

This past week featured John Hyden and his right-hand-woman, Nicole Christner, who coaches literally everywhere around the country and hosts a number of clinics with Hyden. Fun one, a wide-ranging chat about Hyden's career, Tri's retirement, Nicole's coaching journeys, and more:

October 6 World Champs, Here We Come Adelaide, Australia, home of the World Championships Good morning, beach volleyball fans, And greetings from Tallahassee, where I recorded an early early early morning pod breaking down all things Veracruz Challenge -- which lived up to my billing as the most intriguing stop of the season -- and the FINAL STANDINGS for the World Championships. Four Mol brothers and a Mol cousin, all in one event for the men? Six of the top seven teams hailing from either...

September 29 "The people won" Good morning, beach volleyball fans, And greetings from, eh, well, this is embarrassing -- NOT Rio de Janeiro, but my office in Tallahassee. Never did get that visa to Brazil. Not in time, anyway. So we pulled a switcheroo, subbing in Denise Austin on the comms while I stayed at home with my real kiddos and Florida State kiddos. Love me some travel adversity. But wonderful beach volleyball still happened, and Cherif Younousse had it right with the quote above:...

September 22 USA vs. Brazil = Better Than Ever Good morning, beach volleyball fans, And greetings from, you guessed, it, an airport. Tallahassee International today, where I... might not actually leave for Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. Visa problems and stuff. So I'm here, writing to all of you, and will likely return home to my sleepless daughter, construction-loving toddler, and very tired wife. Whether I make it to Rio or not is very TBD; I needed a photo finish in my life. Here we have it. Of...
