Beach Volleyball Digest: Carol, Brazil's new Queen; Why everybody won in Rio; the rise of Chase Budinger and Miles Evans

"The people won"

Good morning, beach volleyball fans,

And greetings from, eh, well, this is embarrassing -- NOT Rio de Janeiro, but my office in Tallahassee. Never did get that visa to Brazil. Not in time, anyway. So we pulled a switcheroo, subbing in Denise Austin on the comms while I stayed at home with my real kiddos and Florida State kiddos. Love me some travel adversity.

But wonderful beach volleyball still happened, and Cherif Younousse had it right with the quote above: The people won. In so many ways.

The Brazilian fans, who I adore, won, being treated to an all-Brazilian final, where the new resident queen, Carol Salgado, won alongside Rebecca Cavalcanti. A battle of worlds No. 1 and 2, in Rio, when both teams are Brazilian?

C'mon.

The men's final, despite not having a Brazilian team, was electric. Qatar vs. Cuba, a 19-17 third-set decider. Doesn't get better than that. Per usual, I have the full recap, discussing:

  • Why Carol is the new iron queen of Brazil, and might set an unbreakable record for most tournaments played
  • Cherif and Ahmed setting a new career-high with three gold medals
  • How Cuba demolished Norway in an eye-opening quarterfinal
  • Stefan Boermans and Yorick de Groot will get a statue made of bronze one day
  • Why Martins Plavins loves Rio, and Rio loves Plavins
  • Melissa Humana-Paredes and Brandie Wilkerson: the Beach Pro Tour's unluckiest winners
  • George and Saymon FLYING up the World Champs standings, now No. 24 and in position to qualify
  • Chase Budinger and Miles Evans careering
  • The stats behind why Chaim Schalk and James Shaw are struggling
  • Ditto for Andy Benesh and Miles Partain
  • Why Terese Cannon, with another medal, is officially one of the best option players in the world

Packed. The podcast with me discussing all of that is on YouTube here and it'll be up on Spotify shortly.

The good news: I don't need a visa to travel to Newport Beach, which is where I'll be next.

October 6 World Champs, Here We Come Adelaide, Australia, home of the World Championships Good morning, beach volleyball fans, And greetings from Tallahassee, where I recorded an early early early morning pod breaking down all things Veracruz Challenge -- which lived up to my billing as the most intriguing stop of the season -- and the FINAL STANDINGS for the World Championships. Four Mol brothers and a Mol cousin, all in one event for the men? Six of the top seven teams hailing from either...

September 22 USA vs. Brazil = Better Than Ever Good morning, beach volleyball fans, And greetings from, you guessed, it, an airport. Tallahassee International today, where I... might not actually leave for Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. Visa problems and stuff. So I'm here, writing to all of you, and will likely return home to my sleepless daughter, construction-loving toddler, and very tired wife. Whether I make it to Rio or not is very TBD; I needed a photo finish in my life. Here we have it. Of...

September 15 Year of The Rogues Good morning, beach volleyball fans, Post-Olympic years are always strange in the beach universe. Couple that with the shifting landscape of domestic beach volleyball, which is moving away from the traditional tournament format on the schedule to the new AVP League, and it's made the year even weirder. It's made it a bit rogue, making room for new events such as the independently run Hermosa Open, adding intrigue to traditional stalwarts like Seaside and the...
