Beach Volleyball Digest: NCAA Madness Continues; 2025 Season Preview; AVP announced wild cards for League

April 7

"Everyone is Good"

Good morning, beach volleyball fans,

That quote above is from John Mayer, head coach of former No. 2-ranked LMU who had front-row seats to more chaos in NCAA Beach Volleyball, where -- take a deep breath -- Cal Poly upset both LMU AND UCLA...and then lost to Long Beach. LMU recovered from both the Poly Loss and a stunner to Stetson... to also beat UCLA, who had been ranked No. 1 for several weeks this season, while USC stumped Stanford.

In Tallahassee, meanwhile, Texas, LSU, and my 'Noles all came down to a third set on a final court against one another; Texas came away undefeated and is playing exceptionally well, while the Noles went 4-1 and LSU went back to Baton Rouge 3-2 but 5 points away from being 5-0.

It's stressful, but so dang fun. Parity all over the map in the NCAA, where, yes, "everyone is good."

There's your lay of the land for NCAA Beach Volleyball: Everyone is good.

As for the lay of the land of the rest of the beach volleyball world, I got you covered on this week's podcast.

The week in SANDCAST Studios

This past week's podcast was the first solo episode we've ever done for our Wednesday pod, a similar format to Road to Paris but this time covering everything you need to know about the 2025 beach volleyball season:

News Around the Beach

  • The AVP has given out wild cards. Kristen Nuss and Taryn Brasher, and Melissa Humana-Paredes and Brandie Wilkerson, are both straight into the 2025 AVP League. Kelly Cheng and Molly Shaw...are not. Interesting. I wrote about it here.
  • We now have an ad free tier for audio. Tired of listening to ads? I saw a bunch of comments on the ad frequency in Rogan podcasts, and figured I'd give our listeners an ad-free option. For 5 bucks a month, you no longer have to listen to ads, and you support the show. Win win. Here's the link where you can become a patron.
  • FSU Camps coming this summer! We're running a camp on July 12, followed by a BVNE tournament the next day. Should be awesome. Sign up here.
  • Watch SANDCAST Episodes Early! Become a member of our YouTube Channel and you'll get every piece of content days before anybody else.
  • Coming up on Wednesday we have James Shaw and Molly Shaw, the latest new power couple on the AVP and Beach Pro Tour.

April 28 There's No Place Like Gulf Shores Good morning, beach volleyball fans, The first open tournament I ever played was in Gulf Shores, Alabama, in May of 2015, on a few courts backed up against the NCAA Championships. Though I didn't know it at the time, it was the first time I had ever crossed paths with Delaney Knudsen, who was then a court one standout for Pepperdine (and would narrowly lose in three in the finals to a team you may have heard of, Kelly Claes and Sara Hughes). I...

April 21 TKN Loves New Jewelry Good morning, beach volleyball fans, Kristen Nuss and Taryn Brasher have been big into new jewelry additions as of late. Both rock Olympic rings necklaces. Brasher, as you can no doubt surmise by her new last name, has added a nice new wedding ring to her ring finger, and Nuss -- soon to be Mrs. Cruz to you -- is rocking an engagement ring. Now, after Sunday's gold medal win over Carol Salgado and Rebecca Cavalcanti at the Brasilia Elite16, they have a medal of...

April 14 Walk-off Aces Work Good morning, beach volleyball fans, This weekend was complete and utter chaos in the beach volleyball world, but I'd like to pause here for a moment and state one objective fact: No drama on the sand, this weekend or the next, can rival that of the Masters. Watching that on the flight home from Cal Poly -- more on that in a sec -- was as thrilling sports theater as I can remember watching. My heart is happy for Rory McIlroy, and all seems right in the golf world....
